Ear Shaping (Otoplasty) Basics
Otoplasty involves removing skin and reshaping cartilage from behind the ears. The ears are then stitched into the new position with the
incision marks cleverly concealed in the natural crease behind the ear. This is most commonly performed under a Local Anaesthetic with sedation.
You will need to wear bandages around your ears for about 7-14 days at which time any stitches will be removed.
Is Otoplasty the right choice for me?
The final decision will be made between you and your Surgeon. However, the following reasons are typical of most people choosing to undertake this surgery:
- Lack of self confidence due to protruding ears
- Unable to wear particular hairstyles or have a short hair cut as it would emphasise the problem
- Unwelcome comments from friends or work colleagues
- Inability to follow career of choice that involves wearing a hat / cap as it may draw attention to the ears
- Restrictions in sports such as swimming, where wet hair will reveal the problem
- Increased self-confidence and self esteem
- Wider choice of hairstyles
- Stop unfriendly comments
- More choice in sports and careers
- Delayed wound healing
- Infection
- Pressure sores from the dressing
- Asymmetry – it is impossible to guarantee both ears will sit back at the same distance and further surgery may be necessary to correct this
- General Anaesthetic risks - including Deep Vein Thrombosis
