Penis Revision (Penoplasty) Basics
Penoplasty comprises two procedures; one of which increases the length and the other the girth of the penis. Both of these procedures can be
undertaken at the same time. The operation can be performed either under a General or Local Anaesthetic with sedation. The procedure takes between
one to two hours; this is of course dependent on whether you have one or two procedures. It is very important that you stop smoking for 15 days before
and 15 days after Penoplasty.
Increase in length:
This procedure releases the suspensory ligament. This ligament connects the penis to the pubic bones. This technique enables the penis
to become more visible when the penis is in the flaccid state. It is very important to understand that this increase will only be visible when the penis is
flaccid - not erect. The severing of this ligament usually frees up 1 inch of the inner penis. It is not possible to predict the exact amount of gain as this
depends on the anatomical makeup of your penis and pubic area. This is different in every male due to the fat in the pubic area, loose skin in the lower abdomen,
a possible weak suspensory ligament or the past use of vacuum pumps etc. There will be a small permanent scar, shaped like an inverted ‘Y’, in the pubic area.
The pubic hair usually covers this when it re-grows. The length and quality of your erection will be the same as before the surgery. However, some patients may
experience a slightly lower angle of erection.
Increase in girth:
This procedure can increase the girth of the penis substantially and differs between patients. This is undertaken by injecting fat
(which has been harvested from the body) through a small incision in the penis. The fat is then shaped into the shaft of the penis. A very small stab incision
is used to extract the fat usually from the abdomen area. A small stitch may be needed to close this incision. A support garment will be applied after the procedure.
This garment may be required to be worn for up to one week post-operatively. If the foreskin is long the Surgeon may advise you to have a circumcision.
Normally, 30% of the fat injected into the penis is absorbed in a few months. The remainder may or may not be permanent, but in many cases it is long lasting.
In a small number of patients fat top-up procedures might be necessary.
In some cases the penis may be asymmetrical or lumps may occur due to the position of the fat. This problem is normally resolved with massage or injections. Swelling to the head of the penis can sometimes occur and some pain or discomfort is possible for the first 12-24 hours.
Is Penoplasty the right choice for me?
If when undressed you continuously feel embarrassed or self conscious about the size of your penis in front of others, in situations like the changing
rooms in your gym or sports club, then Penoplasty could give you peace of mind.
Sometimes a psychological assessment maybe of help, this can be discussed with your Surgeon. Your decision to undertake the procedure of
Penoplasty will be made after you have received information from your Surgeon regarding the benefits and risks of the procedure.
